2005 Pacific Southwest Regional Conference
March 31 - April 2, 2005
California State University, Fullerton
Events and Activities
The competitions are a great way to hone your skills and break out of the classroom mold. If you'd like to get more involved, consider being a team captain! Below is a list of the events at conference this year and a short description. Click on the event links below for detailed descriptions and complete rules.
Basketball
THIS EVENT HAS BEEN CANCELLED (3/1/05). SHAME ON FULLERTON!
Concrete Bowling Ball
Teams use their engineering skill, ingenuity, and athletic agility to create a bowling ball made of concrete. Scores are based on bowling ability, aesthetics, design, and presentation.
If you are interested in being a team captain for this event, please contact Julia Creel.
Concrete Canoe
ASCE Student Chapters and Clubs have been involved in constructing and racing concrete canoes on the local and regional level since the early 1970's. Hull design, mix design, presentation, endurance of the canoe, and endurance of the racers all factor into the final score.
Contact team captain Tanner Hartranft for more information.
Concrete Frisbee
Everyday engineers are using new materials and creating innovative techniques to design every aspect of society. This event requires ingenuity and imagination and is a great way to learn about new mix techniques making concrete more durable.
Contact team captain Francis Mangaoan for more information.
Impromptu Design
The Impromptu competition is a fun tradition of the PSWRC designed to test general engineering skills. The event is unknown prior to competition even the host school. How well can you design on the fly? Are you a pro at doing homework at the last minute? Consider this event just right for you!
Contact team captain Kellin Luong for more information.
Mystery Event
This year the YMF (Younger Member Forum) will be hosting the Mystery Event. None of the schools, including the host school will know what the event will be until the conference.
Contact team captain Camille Calimlim for more information.
Seismic Design
The rules have now been published for this competition. Like in the past, teams will construct structures and test them. Last year, the task was to design and build a 1/12th-scale model of a high rise building for testing. Seniors and graduate students are encouraged to sign up!
If you are interested in being a team captain for this event, please contact Julia Creel.
School Feud
Teams compete to match answers in civil engineering categories.

Steel Bridge
The Student Steel Bridge Competition is a national contest sponsored by the American Institute of Steel Construction (AISC) and ASCE. Students design, fabricate, and construct a bridge. This competition is not only about structural efficiency, as bridges are judged on assembly time and aesthetics.
Contact team captain Brian Allen for more information.
Surveying
The land surveying competition is intended to test basic surveying skills as well as problem solving ability. Since surveying is a required skill for the Civil Engineering P.E. License, this competition is a good chance to learn all about it.

Technical Paper
This competition is modeled after the Daniel Mead paper (click for rules) sponsored by ASCE. This year's topic is: "Computers, Civil Engineering, and Ethics". The papers must be received by March 1, 2005.
This paper may also be submitted at the national level for individual award.
Tug-O-War
The tug-o-war competition is a fun tradition of the PSWRC. The competition will be played in single-elimination tournament style. Round match-ups will be randomly selected prior to tournament play.
